audio file format

One small question

1.  I want to include audio as an attribute in my entry. What
extension of file should I use to convert into binary?
.mp3,.xm????Because I tried both, but when in browser, I click on Play
Audio Clip, it opens Windows Media Player, and finally it gives error
"Bad format"..
