On the current versions of the CVS trunk, I don't think nmake is really 
supported any more.  We should probably "cvs remove" the nmake files. 
Perhaps mcs or mhein and comment on this...

The thing to do now is use GNU make; either with configure, or by using 
the "Makefile.client" files.
