I've successfully imported quite a few CA certificates into iDS5.1SP1, so i can verify that it does, in fact, work. I just had to import it through the console. Make sure that the trial root CA cert is valid (check dates) and possibly try some certs from other public CA's. All of our certs were generated via OpenSSL, you may give that a try.
