yes, I'm still lurking in this News group, even if I'm not actively participating in the discussions. :-) I've been getting quite a few email and News articles asking about PerLDAP problems, or it's status. As you probably have noticed, PerLDAP stopped development several years ago, for several reasons (which I won't go into here). However, there still seems to be interest in, and a need for, PerLDAP.
The idea was that v1.4.1 would be the last 1.x release, and that a complete rewrite (v2.0) would be released in some reasonable time frame. Well, that obviously didn't happen ... So, I've decided to make one more 1.x release, call it v1 if you like. This does *not* mean there will be a v2.0 release!
What will v1 be? Well, here's my current plan, but I'm semi-open for suggestions (and completely open for contributions):
* Bug fixes. I plan to fix as many as possible of the outstanding bugs that are reported for v1.x. For a list, see
http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/buglist.cgi?product=Directory&component=PerLDAP&bug_status=ASSIGNED
* Make sure it builds with released C-SDK as well as Mozilla source C-SDK on a few selected platforms (basically, the platforms I have access to).
* Make sure it works with latest Perl, 5.8. I will not test or produce any binaries for older versions of Perl, but I'll try not to break anything intentionally (i.e. I will not change code to use 5.8 specific features unless absoultely necessary).
* Prepare builds for a few selected platforms:
- RedHat 7.3, 8.0 and 9.0 (RPMs)
- Cygwin (for Windows)
- Latest ActiveState Perl (again, Windows)
- Possibly FreeBSD and MacOSX
- Possibly SunOS 8 (assuming I can use the Sourceforge compile farm)* Possibly merge some of the new features that were written for PerLDAP v2.0, like the schema module.
If you have other bugs, please file them at http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/ and please be as descriptive as possible. Even better, if you have patches, send them directly to me (or post here).
Cheers,
-- Leif
