disappearing versioncache file

I keep getting this error:  Can't locate data/versioncache ...   That
file keeps getting unlinked by the program and is causing this error.
Does anyone know why the file is deleted and not re-written?  I could go
through and comment out the lines that delete the file, but that is not
a sound solution. (it is getting unlinked for a reason)  Any help would
be appreciated.  Thanks,
