I agree completely. The biggest problem with both docs and code is steering and its corollary, discipline. It really sucks to read through docs whose style keeps changing every third sentence, or that use the same word to mean completely different things in different sections. (A "window" means A here, but B here). There's a whole raft of problems that such a position can help avoid or at least reduce. And it does tie into UI in that the docs should mirror the UI's simplicity, one-to-one defs and soforth wherever possible (Johnson's GUI Bloopers lays out the principles). I also agree with the timetable -- this person should be in there NOW way before people start marking the turf and carving out their own sections and their own styles...before we get to the point of doc "irreconciliable differences."
