One of the (IMHO) valid criticisms of the new mozilla.org website is
that it doesn't explan what the word "free" means in the context of
Mozilla (see, for example, bug 227708 [1]). For instance, on the
homepage, the link to a "free download" of Mozilla 1.6 comes just under
the link to "Order a CD", so the casual user may end up with the
impression that the CD version is the full version and the "free"
download is just a trial. There are also other "free" products that have
a rather unsavoury reputation e.g. Realplayer or Gator. Obviously we
don't want people to get the idea that Mozilla is going to install
spyware, adverts or other junk on their system.
To this end, I have written a draft document: "How 'free' is Mozilla?"
[2]. If it's generally considered useful, it might be nice to put the
document somewhere discoverable on mozilla.org so that we avoid unwanted
assosiations with other products that bill themselves as 'free'.
