One of the (IMHO) valid criticisms of the new mozilla.org website is that it doesn't explan what the word "free" means in the context of Mozilla (see, for example, bug 227708 [1]). For instance, on the homepage, the link to a "free download" of Mozilla 1.6 comes just under the link to "Order a CD", so the casual user may end up with the impression that the CD version is the full version and the "free" download is just a trial. There are also other "free" products that have a rather unsavoury reputation e.g. Realplayer or Gator. Obviously we don't want people to get the idea that Mozilla is going to install spyware, adverts or other junk on their system.

To this end, I have written a draft document: "How 'free' is Mozilla?" [2]. If it's generally considered useful, it might be nice to put the document somewhere discoverable on mozilla.org so that we avoid unwanted assosiations with other products that bill themselves as 'free'.

Feedback is very much welcome.
