It was suggested to me by fantasai that I post some info on Firefox Help to n.p.m.documentation (and I figure n.p.m.l10n wouldn't hurt, either, as a heads-up for changes that localizers will be working through ;-) ). I originally made the post to [EMAIL PROTECTED], not thinking that it would be useful here as well. As of a couple weeks ago, [EMAIL PROTECTED] is world-readable, but given that it hasn't really been publicized as such I should have remembered that here would be the ideal place to post. Anyways, the state of (built-in) Firefox Help is as follows (slightly edited from original so as to update it with reality):
Right now I'm primarily concentrating on debugging Help docs (because invalid information is a more important problem than incomplete information, except with completely undocumented UI like 258665/258076 and to an extent 259387). Also, because I've got a temporary copy-writing block right now, most of the documentation changes that don't involve some sort of "coding" (as opposed to just writing HTML) are coming from others. Many of the bugs are at least partially started, so with a few people chipping in (and they are) most if not all should be fixed by 1.0. The current list of bugs (with estimated difficulty and state of completion) I'm looking to fix for 1.0 is:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=258665 - 90% done, needs a last patch addressing reviews https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=248264 - work-in-progress, already under control https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=259827 - reviewed, waiting for me to check in https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=258076 - normal, 60% done https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=259387 - normal https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=260050 - normal/major, depends what docs we steal from elsewhere https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=254992 - normal/major - shouldn't be punted to >1.0 but might end up so https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=260051 - major unless stealable docs already written up elsewhere
More bugs probably need to be added, but right now I'm attacking what I have on the plate. Once that's done I can look back and find more docs omissions.
Anyways, that's the list of changes I really want to make for 1.0. It's entirely possible (and even likely) that more will be made, as new bugs are filed all the time. In terms of the current list, however, this is what I consider to be most important. These bugs are gaps, omissions, inconsistencies, and inaccuracies that make Help not useful in some way for some subset of Firefox users. In general they are not for the /addition/ of documentation in areas that are already sufficiently documented. Addition is nice, but what's needed now is general polishing and syncing with the Firefox of now (and probably a few weeks from now, too, as changes keep forcing us to alter things, like the shortcuts list).
The deadline for Help changes for 1.0 is (if I recall correctly) October 15th, so there's a week left to fix these. I don't foresee any problems except for with the last two, one of which is a Help viewer bug (but which will likely require some changes to RDF code for docs should it be fixed in time) and one of which requires a major Help doc to be written, debugged, and reviewed in under a week (possible, but difficult).
We'll be tracking the fixed bugs in 253104 and via the late-l10n keyword. If you have any questions/concerns, please follow up with reply posts to n.p..m.documentation (posts should already be directed there). Thanks!
