How do I prevent changes to my ASP tags?

In my html files, I have tags such as

<%=somevariable %>

Mozilla composer (v1.41) converts these to text strings..

&lt;%=somevariable%&gt;

I did go to prefs and click "retain original source formatting" which
probably has nothing to do with this issue ;)

any ideas out there?
