I agree. There should be a preference for users who want <p> instead of <br>. It would also be nice to have Shift-Enter or Ctrl-Enter insert a <p>.
Fine if you want to default to <br> but for those of us trying to use Composer as an editor it would be nice to offer the choice.
I'd like a _lot_ more control over the defaults: Composer insists on imposing its preferences on code I've already written, changing my ~ to %7E whether I want it to or not, inserting useless code of all kinds, and "adjusting" my links so that they no longer work, among other annoying things. Netscape 4.7's Composer was a far superior editor. Unfortunately, I can't use it effectively any more because it doesn't recognize so many of the useless innovations other composers are inserting in the code. So I have to struggle against Mozilla's defaults, check every file to see that my links haven't been destroyed (e.g., substituting absolute links to local files or to a URL for the simple relative filename link I use), etc.
