One cluster that has already been unraveled is the XPConnect standalone
build. Look in client.mak for xpconnect_standalone. Check this bug:

The Mozilla code base would make an excellent platform (like QT) if the
internal platform were: 1) more documented (Doxygen works for me, let's post
the output on mozilla.org) and 2) buildable in a hierarchical fashion out of
components instead of this tangled web.
For example I wanted to write a little test program for working on the gfx
code. There is no way to do this without bringing down and building all of
Mozilla.
