Try DownloadAccelerator from www.speedbit.com Also, do some simple things like emptying the Recycle Bin and the temp directory. It's amazing how much space is chowed down in those two directories alone.
Try zipping stuff that you don't need live, but don't want to get rid of. If you can roll it out to a floppy, zip or tape backup, even better. Good luck!
