Hi Conrad,

Thanks, I'll try and play with this sometime in the next week or two!

See http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=202450. There is a patch there which builds Gecko as an OS X framework. I can't remember if it copied Gecko headers to the framework's Headers directory or not. It would be pretty easy to do so. In the patch, the framework was used along with a Cocoa app, but I don't think anything about the framework itself is inherently Cocoa. The problem with having a framework on the Mac (or any OS where there are multiple toolkits) is that Mozilla is compiled for one toolkit or another. Hence, Carbon and Cocoa apps could not use the same framework.

Has anyone considered or tried making a GRE.Framework for OS X? Frameworks provide the versioning capabilities the GRE needs, and makes the GRE available system-wide to any apps that want to use it. This would be a very, very nice thing to have for OS X. =)

I am porting on MacOSX an application running on Linux and using the xpcom
library. On (RedHat) Linux I installed the mozilla-devel rpm, containing
all the C/C++ header files. Is there such package available for MacOSX?
If not, is there a way to get those headers without building the whole
mozilla on MacOSX (10.3) ?

try installing the mozilla-dev package in Fink. It's only Moz 1.1 but might work for you.
