Perhaps the real question to ask is if, at least for AOL's purposes, if
Mozilla has a life outside single-use or embedded contexts. Platform
integration doesn't really matter much if the browser is the only
application, or if it's the main application on a platform like Linus, where
GUI coooperation is pretty weak anyway. AOL is already partnering with
Gateway on an AOL appliance and I'm sure we are going to see more examples
of this AOL Anywhere strategy in the future.
Perhaps people need to stop looking to Netscape as the place to get a
browser that integrates with their OS of choice. Instead, separate
Gecko-hosting applications will need to be written instead. It is very
disappointing that Netscape 6 seems to be regressing in this area (at least
from what I've heard about the Mac and Windows versions), but on the other
hand it's Open Source so Mozilla users don't need Netscape anymore, right ?
