Hi all! I sure hope someone can help. I have a number of clients using communicator 4.7x under various MS Windows Operating Systems. I have virtually all of the clients's netscape installations carefully configured. I'd like to move to Netscape 6 (or Mozilla), but the lack of substantive configurability, particularly setting an alternate location for the user's profile data, is preventing this. I'm looking at approximately 150 instances. The common theme of my configurations is to move the profile data to a network drive, and locate the cache files on the local hard drive. This improves data security (both privacy and against data loss), without choking the network with cache accesses. The profiles are kept in each user's secure home directory, in a standard location (netscape). This way access to the user's e-mail is controlled and provided by the user's logon. Their e-mail and WWW settings are not machine dependent, and no data needs to be backed up from workstations. Each user can only access their own e-mail/WWW settings. At two clients I have altered setup.ini so that Communicator 4.7x prevents users from using anything other than the network profile (tinkerers and blunderers can be such a PITA). There is one client that has a number of shared address books, but that will likely be taken care of by moving the address books to LDAP directories (yay for linux and open LDAP!). I need to maintain this infrastructure (I have no wish to re-invent a perfectly functional system), or something very similar. Although I have not had time to browse through all the registry settings, it appears that the designers have slavishly followed Microsoft's devotion to mixing data with program code and have hard-coded the location of these critical files to go somewhere in the Operating System tree (depending on what flavour of Windows is running), rather than in a data location. (Systems design rule #1 - keep dynamic user data separate from static program code whenever possible.) Can anyone confirm for me if the location and name for the profile data (users50) *is* hard-coded, or point out what I need to do to gain control of the application? TIA! d. Please reply by e-mail also.
