copying and pasting text into mail and forms currently does some
very strange things:
1. copying text from another mail or from a web page pasts it a
preformat" into the body of my mail. This causes the formatting to
be all screwed up (inserts hard returns, font is different, etc).
Pasted text should always be pasted as pure text or at least as
"body" formatted text.
2. Editig pasted text in compose window by removing hard returns
causes the text text to extend WAY beyond the visible window to
the right. Then, when the text is sent it all seems wrapped OK;
even hard returns i had inserted are suddenly gone. All this is
horribly non-intuitive. There needs to be a much better way to
deal with hard and soft returns in email.
3. It seems that emails are not consistent when dealing with *soft
returns*. The user should be able to type a long text and the text
would wrap depending on his window width. When the mail arrives at
the recipient, the text should then wrap according to the
recipient's window width. Soft returns *need* to be retained in
the document, whether it is a HTML mail or text mail. The current
behaviour is irratic (most email programs have this problem).
4. Character Coding is confusing and often doesn't work.
I live in Germany wher german umlauts are used (a, o u with dots
on them - ä, ö, ü). My wife uses NC 4.7 and i use mozilla
(20010125). We both use the Compuserve IMAP server. I receive mail
at work through our company server. When she sends me an email
with umlauts, it allways arrives garbled (ä&).
This should not be. There should be one standard character set
that includes the western alphabet and all western countries'
accents. This character set cannot be larger than 200-400
characters and would therefore be easily manageable by any modern OS.
