You can enter URLs in the text field that is to the right of the
navigation buttons (Back, Forward, Reload, and Stop) -- even though the
button next to it says `Search'. Just press Enter when you have finished
typing the URL.
You are the second person who has been smart enough to post to a Mozilla
newsgroup with this problem, but who has been fooled by the existence of
that `Search' button into thinking that you cannot enter URLs into the
text field. I dread to think how many thousands of others have been
similarly confused, but have not known where to ask for help.
It's particularly bad user interface design on Netscape's part (and it
is Netscape who are to blame for this one), given that they knew a long
time ago that `most users do not differentiate between pressing "enter"
and clicking the button'. (See `Search button should not try to search
URLs' <http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=32791>.)
