A very good question, I think it's traditional, when they first started doing 
the daily builds they occured at night, now they seem to be built almost 
continually.

They're very bleeding edge, letting you try out the code checked in during the 
day. The Milestone builds are tested before release, whereas the nightlies are 
not. So a rogue bug caused by checkins can sometimes wreck havoc with your 
bookmarks or profile (though they've never had any other harmful effect on my 
machines - Linux, NT4, Win95). Occasionally they won't run at all.
