i downloaded mozilla 0.8.1 today to try out on my machine:

host-<133> uname -rsm
Linux 2.2.14-5.0smp i686

i got the tar.gz file, expanded everything, crossed my fingers,
and typed ./mozilla.

i got:

host-<134> ./mozilla
./run-mozilla.sh ./mozilla-bin
MOZILLA_FIVE_HOME=/part/local/linux/package/mozilla-0.8/mozilla

LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/part/local/linux/package/mozilla-0.8/mozilla:/part/local/linux/package/mozilla-0.8/mozilla

          LIBPATH=/part/local/linux/package/mozilla-0.8/mozilla
       ADDON_PATH=/part/local/linux/package/mozilla-0.8/mozilla

all seemed well... but then a completely empty window popped up, named
"Confirm Migration." it had no text, but it had two buttons (unlabelled).

i figured the left one was "OK" and right one was "Cancel", so i
cancelled, and mozilla stopped. then i got bolder, tried it again, and
then clicked on the left one. mind you, there's no text telling me what
i'm doing here.

so some progress indicator shows up for a few seconds, and in the text
window i see:

Inside Migrate Profile routine.
start of pref migration

and then... boom, up comes mozilla, pointing at my normal (netscape4.75)
home page. the window is entitled Mozilla {Build ID: 2001032614}. but
there are no menu headers, and the pulldowns have no text in them.

it's as if mozilla forgot to use a font -- except that the text inside
the rendered HTML appears perfectly.

it "works," sort of -- i can type URLs into the window at the top, and
it renders cnn and espn, but i don't know what anything in the menus
does.

i've looked around on the net and the newgroups, but nobody else seems
to have had this problem.

does anybody have any ideas?

TIA,
ron
