I use a neat Spell Checker for the Mac called SpellTools. It works with
"any" Application just go into spelltools >Goodies >Create application
Plugin the browse to selected application and select it. 

Next time you open that application a Floating pallette apears in the
application. 

you can check spelling of words, speak all words in the mesage whether
quoted or not, date and time stamp, normalize returns and spaces, zap >
and  add >"s, upper and lower case a Text selection, Captialize a text
selection, Strip leading spaces. Word count of a selection, find and
replace a Text Selection.
