It overwrites it on *exit* - was mozilla running when you made the
change?
The correct procedure for editing prefs.js is as follows:
- Quit mozilla (if you like, use ps -x to make sure it's not still
running)
- Edit prefs.js (you want the one in your home directory btw - /root is
root's home directory)
- Start mozilla
I can't comment on this specific pref, but I do know that this is the
procedure for making changes to prefs.js in general.
