Mozilla and .gz files (esp. on linux)

I have been trying to figure this out for a while, why does mozilla gunzip
my .gz files on the fly while leaving the .gz extension in place. This can
be very annoying because all my .gz file (even though they appear gzipped
by extension) are not gzippped. The behavoir has been same for a while in
all linux mozilla's and ns6.

How can I disable this feature. I have no helper or mime-type difined for 
gz . (I know i can use wget ;-) )
