Because it uses images in table cells for layout, but has
a doctype triggering standards mode. See
http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=22274 (invalid).

Possible workarounds:
- Use another doctype (e.g. HTML 4.0 instead of 4.01,
or 4.01 without URI) to trigger quirks mode
- Add the style "display: block" for the images
- Add the style "vertical-align: bottom" (does not work for
images with a height less than the line height)
- Don't use tables for layout

The vertical space appearing and disappearing when resizing
the window is a bug in Mozilla:
http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=51286 . Haven't
seen this much during the last months, maybe I can distil a
testcase out of your page.
