I have a question about how Mozilla.org manages to combine open
source with controlled development of the primary products.
If the code is freely available, what keeps someone from developing
an alternative browser based on the same code? It's my understanding
that the rights to the code are spread out over so many people that
copyright law does not really control the issue.
My question is not just theoretical. My mail client is very powerful,
totally free, but increasingly complex. It's built by one person.
He's not crazy about releasing the code, probably for a number of
reasons but control is likely one of them. I think that open source
could improve the product and decrease the development time for
upgrades, but I don't have an answer to the control and quality
issues. Yet Mozilla must have the answer, because you have all sorts
of people downloading or working on your product, yet you seem to
have strict quality and production control.
How?
