I used to have a similar problem; that was because Mozilla couldn't load
the Flash plugin while XMMS was using the soundcard.
Then I found out that my soundcard has two devices, or whatever,
/dev/dsp and /dev/dsp1. I configured XMMS to use /dev/dsp1 so that other
apps, like Mozilla, can use /dev/dsp.
Depending on your soundcard, this might not work. You could also try
to make all the apps use a sound daemon/server such as esd or aRts.
(Of course, your problem could also be totally unrelated to all this :)
