Not the reason, merely another symptom of the underlying problem.

Currently, a lot of DHTML (javascript/DOM) processing is S L O W. This
is regarded as a bug, and is under investigation. There's a tracking
bug in bugzilla somewhere, and quite a few bugs for specific issues.
Sorry, I can't recall any bug numbers right now.
