I have not seen anything there either.
Where I know this from is, in part, because the URL for this news server
is
snews://secnews.netscape.com
not
news://secnews.netscape.com
and the difference between the "snews" and "news" protocols
is that "snews" has "Use secure connection (SSL)" checked,
whereas "news" does not. (There is also a different default
TCP/IP port number.)
