You obviously haven't experienced  the bug extant in 4.75 on Solaris 
when you have sufficient bookmarks to produce enough columns to fill the 
screen that you can't reach the last column!  I believe this is why they 
made it scroll instead.  If the developers were to change it back to 
column mode, they'd have to make it a preference option.  I can't see 
that happening anytime soon given the number of bugs they still need to 
fix before Mozilla comes out of beta quality.
