bookmark folders won't expand

I imported all my IE favorites, first exported to html, then pulled that 
in to use as my Mozilla bookmarks but the stuff within the folders can't 
be seen... when I put my mouse over one of the folders a little square 
box appears to the upper right of the right > but I can't see inside the 
folder... is this a bug or is there a setting I'm ignorant of??
