Are you able to run other Java applications? I agree that it shouldn't 
crash, but possibly it is something to do with your Java plug-in. You 
could go to http://java.sun.com and see if the applets on their page work.

I gave it a try on my machine (Mandrake 8.1; I think it's similar to 
your Redhat distribution). It seems to work fine, but I'm running a new 
build so that may not mean too much except that perhaps it's already fixed.
