We use the same broken way to retrieve icons for web sites that MSIE uses. Our *usage* of them is even worse than MSIE for websites, because we retrieve them far more often. You say "many websites". How about those we don't have them? We flood them with bad requests, filling their error log with bogus 404s. They will love us.
