I suppose I should report back on this.  The situation continues as
before and with the same symptoms.  I simply cannot get Mozilla to
work.  I have tried loading off-line the first time, but as soon as I
connect to the Internet and try to access any website, it repeats the
behavior previously described (progress bar freezes, power off
required).  This happens whether I import a profile or create a new one,
and whether I turn antivirus off or not.  It continues through 0.9.7. 
Each time I uninstall, I remove every reference to Mozilla on my hard
drive, but the problems recur with every new install.  This started with
0.9.6, and has persisted through every build since that time.

I don't even know how to file a bug on this, since it is such a massive
failure.  In any event, it has rendered Mozilla useless to me and I can
only hope that the next Netscape won't inherit whatever has messed up
Mozilla.
