Let me guess. You were looking at 'top'? It lied to you. The memory is shared by all the threads. So that's not the reason it's swapping. Process limits? Do a "man bash" and search for "ulimit." (I believe it's kind of broken in the (not-so)-recent 2.4 kernels)
