gzip -dc mozilla-i686-pc-linux-gnu-0.9.7-installer.tar.gz | tar -xvf -

Note the trailing ``-''. The -f option to tar(1) means "the next item is 
a filename". Specifying ``-'' means use stdin.

In fact, tar(1) can gunzip files itself:

tar -zxvf mozilla-i686-pc-linux-gnu-0.9.7-installer.tar.gz
