You might also want to look into the HTML Tidy program, which automates lots of HTML cleanup: http://www.w3.org/People/Raggett/tidy/ I use TidyGUI for initial cleanup then test it with validator.w3.org And if you're really in the mood for perfection, run your pages through Bobby so that they also work for people with disabilities: http://www.cast.org/bobby/
