I just tried to install Protozilla < http://protozilla.mozdev.org/ >,
which is an addon to Mozilla to allow user-definable protocol schemes
to be defined, letting support for various other URI/URL/URN/etc.
types be added to Mozilla.

Unfortunately, it didn't work for me. In fact, it totally horked my
copy of Mozilla, making it come up with nothing but a solid grey
window every time I started it, with no menus or other controls and no
website (though it did display the title of my startup home page).

The only way I could figure out to get Mozilla back to normal was to
manually edit out a reference to Protozilla in overlays.rdf. I think
there are still all sorts of Protozilla references spread over various
configuration files and registry entries, but Mozilla now acts like
Protozilla doesn't exist, so it works again.

Prior to this installation, I had tried to install an earlier version
of Protozilla a few months ago, when I was using an earlier build of
Mozilla, so there was probably a number of files related to it already
installed. That version never seemed to work for me either; it added
a "Protozilla" menu item, but it didn't do anything, and the new
demonstration protocols were ignored. At least it didn't completely
hose my browser interface then.

Anybody else have a clue what's going on?
