Why should I have to? Why do people think it's ok to make a browser that
assumes I have an icon file? What's next? favsound.wav? favflash.swf?
What other stupidities are going to be foisted on people who want to
make a website?
And if someone is unlucky (now) enough to have a www.blah.com.au/~user
website they're going to have to put in <link> tags because they DON'T
want an icon rather then because they do. Dumb.
