Because HTML uses three times the bandwidth to transfer and
display, overloading news and mail servers, slowing down
transfers and downloads. It does nothing to enhance content, it
only clogs up the system from topto bottom so you can clutter up
the message with "stationary", poorly contrasting
print/background, and often unreadable fonts.
And on top of that, it is a potential security hazard.
