Accomodation would be great. This has arisen because no single IM has taken over; I don't want to load AIM, Y!, MSN and ICQ, but I am interested in seeing who just came online from one central application. One facet is that IMs aren't distinguishable enough to make any one proprietary. I recall Apple trying to parlay Quicktime as a proprietary standard for streaming media. I tend to agree, but wish some accommodation could be reached. Like
perhaps AOL could agree that Trillian would be able to access AOL's
servers, provided Trillian's software ran the same ads as AOL's
client. That's what it is all about; if everyone could access AOL's
servers without having to look at their ads, they would lose revenue.
I do think the people who would use Everbuddy and Trillian are the same ones who would get ad-blockers for the AOL program.
The Trillian boards have ample more on these matters. I do credit Netscape/AOL for hosting a public forum where (in addition to obtaining plain brown wrapper Viagra) web users can debate these issues.
