note that it is advisable to uninstall previous versions or at least install a
new version to a seperate directory because there might be conflicts and
problems due to differences between versions (specially if one has installed
addons and have done some customization).

Sometimes older profiles could also be causing issues. If you want you could
investigate exactly what is causing the problem (by maybe trying to narrow down
which file and then which line is causing the problem).

Alternatively backup of all your profiles (including the registry.dat file).
Delete the profiles dir (including the registry.dat file). Start moz. Create new
profiles. Shut down moz. copy old profiles info into new profiles. remember not
to copy XUL.mfl and panacea.dat. Remember to search all files within the profile
for the absolute path of the old profile (there is at least some in the the
prefs.js file if you are using mailnews) and replace it with the path of the new
profile.
