I've been taking a simpler approach. When I see a new release is available
(only been doing this with milestones) I rename the old Mozilla directory to
Mozilla.97 (or whatever's appropriate), install the new release to Mozilla
(which means it is creating a new directory), and then delete the second
previous version (Mozilla.96). This means that I've still got the old version
to fall back on if necessary, and I can easily copy plugins from the previous
version to the current version. I haven't seen any problems with profile
information, although you could certainly take the advice of the previous
poster and delete all profile information other than bookmarks, news, mail,
and prefs.
