Usually a screenshot doesn't need more that 256 colors, even most of the 
times 16 colors is just enough.
About the resolution, depends on what do you want to show, but I think 
that it is usually better to crop the areas that doesn't show any 
information, so you may end with a 200x50 100x400 or any other numbers 
that show just the information that you want to show and not how many 
programs are installed in your desktop.

And about the format, I always use png for screen captures. You can use 
.gif as well, but please don't use jpg as it introduces noise and can 
meke the capture useless.
