Check for Software Updates??

There is now an option in Preferences->Advanced->Software Installation 
to check for 'new versions of this software' weekly or monthly.  What is 
the point of this?  Does it even bother querying somewhere or does it 
pop up a window once a week that says "Since software updates are 
released several times a day, there must be a new version of Mozilla by 
now."
