If they believed the W3C is irrelevant, they wouldn't brag about IE5 Mac being W3C compliant. They wouldn't even help create these standards. They wouldn't even try to make IE more compliant with each new version.
FYI, MS is still very much involved in the continuous creation and updating of these standards, even if they have been the majority browser for years.
