sidebar showHide

Hi all,
I'm wondering if there's a way to controll the sidebar from javascript. I
mainly like to implement these two features:

-clicking a link in the sidebar opens a document in the window and then
hides the sidebar (or viceversa)

-customize the sidebar, I'd like it to be as easy as possible, no
"MySidebar" title, no "Tab" (this implementation of mozilla is going to be
used on TV only, with a resolution of 720x576 every pixel is important)

Any idea?
