I found out that the reason for the (unnecessary! - and no other browser displayed it!)
Sounds like buggy browsers to me.
<div style="z-index:1; position:relative; top:-22px; left:75px; ...
I didn't define the width of it and it seems Mozilla 1.8a calculated it much longer than necessary.
The width should be exactly the same as if the div were not positioned (see definition of relative positioning). So all else being equal, that markup will make the div overflow its container by 75px to the right. If that makes it overflow the viewport, you get a scrollbar.
So sounds like what we're doing is exactly right.
