Can I get rid of the "red dot" for image downloads?

Firefox didn't used to show a "red dot" placeholder while images are
downloading; now it does.  I hate it -- it's very distracting to see
dozens of red dots flash on the screen for a second!  Where in the code is
this implemented, and how can I patch it to remove it?
