Are there any plans to implement it despite the spec caveat? The Bugzilla entry for bug 2212 seems to show no progress being made. The target milestone is set to 'Future' - not a set version, like '1.9'. This feature would be very very useful, not just for financial stuff (centering on the decimal) but for myriad other uses, like theatre cast lists for example. Here's hoping. In the meantime, Firefox does me fine.
