You are right, it is in 4.x, but missing from the menu in NS 6.0

I couldn't find that bug in the bugzilla, so I logged 
http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=61929 to track this. 

You can get the same effect by clicking on the "thread" icon which is in 
the header for the "thread" column (to the left of the "Subject" column.)

This worked in 4.x and works in 6.0
