You can with 4.x as well as other mail programs but Mozilla doesn't like it.
It does something that breaks the pipe so the writer process dies. That's ok
the first time you tro to send a message but, of course, all subsequent ones
freeze Mozilla; in fact, the entire process freezes not just the compose
window.
I do remember that this once worked at one time. Does anyone know what
changed?
